1. Know Your Story

Before writing, identify the core story: Who is involved? What happened? Why does it matter to readers? A clear news angle makes your article focused and compelling. Avoid writing about everything at once — one strong idea per article.

2. Structure: The Inverted Pyramid

Lead with the most important information. Your opening paragraph (the lede) should answer Who, What, When, Where, and Why. Supporting details follow in descending order of importance. This ensures readers get the key facts immediately.

3. Writing the Lede

Your first sentence must hook the reader. Keep it under 35 words. Avoid starting with "In a world where…" or vague introductions. Get straight to the point. A strong lede makes editors and readers continue.

4. Attribution & Sources

Always attribute facts, quotes, and data to their source. Use named sources when possible. If a source requests anonymity, note it clearly. Never fabricate quotes or paraphrase inaccurately. Direct quotes use quotation marks; paraphrased quotes do not.

5. Objectivity & Fairness

Present multiple perspectives on controversial topics. Separate facts from opinion. If you include your interpretation, frame it clearly as analysis. Avoid loaded language. Your job is to inform, not to persuade.

6. Headlines

Write headlines that are specific, accurate, and engaging. Avoid clickbait. A good headline summarizes the story accurately and entices the reader. Use active voice and strong verbs. Keep it under 10 words when possible.

7. Fact-Checking

Verify every claim before publishing. Check names, dates, figures, and locations against primary sources. If you are uncertain about a fact, leave it out or clearly mark it as unverified. One factual error undermines the entire piece.

8. Voice & Style

Write in clear, simple language. Avoid jargon unless writing for a specialist audience. Use short sentences and paragraphs. Active voice is preferred. Read your piece aloud — if it sounds awkward, rewrite it. Clarity is always more important than complexity.
